CAN declares three-day mourning, demands emergency on insecurity

The Christian Association of Nigeria has declared a three-day national mourning period over the rising tide of killings across the country, calling on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity.

CAN's demand comes as kidnappings, banditry, and communal clashes continue to claim thousands of lives in nearly every region of Nigeria. The umbrella body for Christian denominations said the situation has become so dire that ordinary governance measures no longer suffice.

The association did not specify exactly which incidents triggered the mourning declaration, but the timing reflects months of deteriorating security in the north and south. Armed groups have attacked communities, abducted schoolchildren, and killed farmers, traders, and government officials with near impunity.

CAN's leadership views the state of emergency call as necessary because it would unlock additional resources, centralise decision-making, and allow the military and police to operate under extraordinary powers. The organisation argues that normal bureaucratic processes have failed to stem the violence.

The three-day mourning period signals that CAN sees the violence not as episodic crises but as a national catastrophe requiring the country to pause and reassess. Church leaders will use the period to pray for the dead and survivors, and to push the government toward action.

The Federal Government has not yet responded to CAN's demand. Officials have repeatedly said they are committed to crushing insurgency and banditry, but the security situation on the ground suggests their strategies are not working. The defence establishment has asked for more funding and manpower, claims the government is already stretched.

CAN's intervention carries weight because it represents millions of Nigerian Christians whose communities have been hit hard by the violence. When the association speaks, both the government and the public take notice.

The mourning period begins immediately, and CAN will push the government's response in the coming days. If the Federal Government does not act, church leaders are likely to intensify pressure through prayer vigils, public statements, and calls for accountability from elected officials.
