Gas leak hits Ogun school, hospitalises dozens of students

A gas leak at a school in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has sent scores of students and staff to hospital, marking the third such incident in the area within two months.

The leak occurred at the school on Wednesday, forcing authorities to evacuate the premises immediately. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the affected persons to nearby medical facilities for treatment and observation.

Officials have not yet confirmed the source of the gas or identified the specific chemical involved. The school remained closed as investigations continued into how the leak happened and what measures could prevent future occurrences.

This latest incident has raised fresh concerns about industrial safety in Ijebu-Ode, a town known for its concentration of factories and chemical plants. Two previous gas leaks in the area over the past eight weeks have already put residents on edge, with some calling for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations.

The Ogun State government has promised to conduct a full inquiry into the matter. Officials say they will work with relevant agencies to inspect facilities in the area and ensure compliance with safety standards.
