The Nigerian Air Force says it will pursue terrorists, insurgents and kidnappers to whatever corner of the country they retreat to, as the military intensifies its campaign against armed groups.
Air Chief Marshal Hasan Abubakar made the declaration while addressing concerns about the escalating security crisis that has crippled large parts of northern Nigeria. The force, he said, has stepped up combat readiness across all operational theatres to counter the threats.
The statement comes as kidnapping and terrorist attacks continue to plague Nigeria, with armed groups ranging from Boko Haram splinter factions to bandit networks operating with impunity across multiple states. Schools have shut down, businesses have collapsed, and communities remain under siege in affected regions.
Abubakar did not provide specific details on new strategies or additional resources the NAF plans to deploy, but he stressed that the force remains committed to its mandate. He said the air force would work alongside ground troops and other security agencies to contain the security challenge.
The air force has faced criticism from residents and lawmakers who say the military response has been inadequate, with attacks and abductions continuing at a relentless pace. Some communities have complained of delayed responses to distress calls and insufficient air cover during ground operations.
The Air Chief's remarks suggest the NAF intends to expand operations beyond current strongholds and pursue armed groups more aggressively. However, experts warn that without intelligence improvements, additional funding, and coordination with state governments, such declarations may amount to little more than rhetoric.
The military has not announced when specific operations will begin or which states will receive priority attention. The NAF is expected to present a detailed operational plan to the defence ministry within the coming weeks.
