NGX tumbles 3.11% as investors dump banking, oil stocks

Nigerian stock investors took profits across major sectors this week, sending the NGX All-Share Index down 3.11% to close at 242,593.31 points by Friday, June 5, 2026.

The sell-off hit banking counters hardest, with blue-chip lenders shedding value as traders locked in gains from earlier rallies. Industrial stocks and oil and gas shares also came under pressure, following the broader market retreat.

Profit-taking has become a familiar pattern in the market as investors become selective about which positions to hold. The week's decline erased early gains and left the index lower than where it started June trading.

Traders are watching for signs of where buying interest might return, with focus likely to shift toward corporate earnings reports and economic data in the coming weeks.
