The Ogun State government on Thursday dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram insurgents, and other terrorist groups plan to invade the state, saying the claims are false and designed to spread panic.

Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, said in a statement that security intelligence from relevant agencies shows the state remains safe and secure. He urged residents to ignore the misinformation and avoid spreading unverified claims that could trigger unnecessary fear.

Akinmade accused some individuals of exploiting security challenges in other parts of Nigeria to create alarm in Ogun State. He said this behaviour is irresponsible and capable of causing anxiety among residents who should otherwise feel protected by the government's security measures.

The government said security agencies across the state remain on high alert with adequate measures in place to prevent any criminal activity. Akinmade disclosed that security operatives have already arrested some individuals linked to spreading the false reports on social media. Those arrested are facing prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others who may attempt similar acts.

Akinmade stressed that the government takes the spread of deliberate misinformation seriously and will hold accountable anyone who seeks to create panic or disrupt public peace. He warned that further attempts to circulate false security narratives will result in legal action against the perpetrators.

The state government highlighted strong collaboration among security agencies, local authorities, traditional institutions, and community leaders as a key strength in maintaining peace. This coordination, the government said, has improved intelligence gathering and rapid response capacity across the state.

Ogun State is also working to fine-tune security measures that bring together conventional security agencies and traditional security architecture at grassroots level. The integrated approach aims to strengthen intelligence sharing, community participation, and early warning systems by leveraging the role of traditional rulers and community leaders alongside modern security frameworks.

The government will continue to work with security agencies to apprehend and prosecute anyone spreading misinformation or attempting to undermine public order in the state.
