Oba Rilwan Akiolu I, the paramount ruler of Lagos, has expressed his confidence in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the upcoming Saturday Governorship elections. This statement was made on Thursday when Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party governorship candidate, visited the Iga-Iduganran Palace to inform the monarch of his ambitions.

While the monarch praised Rhodes-Vivour for his determination and courage in pursuing his goals, he maintained that Sanwo-Olu would come out victorious in the election. Akiolu stated that he supports Sanwo-Olu because of his belief in the governor and because divine guidance has indicated Sanwo-Olu’s success.

In his words;

“I declared my support for Sanwo-Olu because I believe in him and the Lord has said it is Sanwo-Olu who will win.

“For you Gbadebo, the future is open to us. God will not kill you, there is nothing wrong in you contesting.

“All of those contesting are my children. God should help us to make the state better. When Sanwo-Olu wins, the government will involve all of us, there is no winner takes all, and God will grant him long life.”

The paramount ruler encouraged Rhodes-Vivour to continue his efforts, stating that there is nothing wrong with his aspirations. Akiolu also emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration, assuring that Sanwo-Olu’s government will involve everyone, and that no one will be left out.

Akiolu described Rhodes-Vivour’s visit as appropriate and acknowledged his right as a Nigerian citizen to consult with the monarch. He also advised the young politician to remain persistent after the election and affirmed his support for Sanwo-Olu.

Addressing the notion that “Lagos is a no man’s land,” Akiolu urged residents to maintain peace and avoid any acts of electoral violence while exercising their civil responsibilities. He also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, anticipating positive changes under the leadership of President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The Oba reminded politicians of their accountability to both the people and God and urged them to fulfill their electoral promises. He also mentioned that the #EndSARS protest would not have escalated if the government had been more responsive.

On behalf of the Labour Party candidate, Adekoyejo Rhodes reiterated the party’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful election and expressed their readiness to accept the outcome if the election proceeds fairly and without conflict.
