Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro designs have been widely leaked, but recent information from a trusted source reveals that the tech giant made a last-minute decision to retain a portion of a significant update that had been previously discarded. Insider Unknownz21 has disclosed that while Apple decided to abandon the solid-state haptic volume buttons intended for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the company managed to salvage the much-awaited Action button, which will take the place of the mute switch.
The innovative Action button is expected to derive its concept from the Apple Watch Ultra, with customizable software features. It remains uncertain whether the button will support various functions through double tapping, long, or pressure-based presses, but it will certainly be solid-state.
This alteration in the iPhone 15 Pro’s design comes at a late stage in the device’s development. Unknownz21 shared renders of the solid-state volume button component that Apple initially intended to incorporate. However, since the phone is still undergoing the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) phase, there was room to adjust the design. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the change will not affect the scheduled release date.
This compromise may ultimately prove beneficial for iPhone users. The enhanced functionality of the Action button is likely to appeal to customers and help them acclimate to using a solid-state button. On the other hand, the solid-state volume buttons faced challenges with implementation, such as swipe gesture controls, which could have caused confusion for both buyers and case manufacturers. Allowing another year for the development of this component appears to be a prudent decision.
As for other features of the iPhone 15 Pro, multiple leaks suggest that the device will boast record-breaking slim front bezels, revolutionary performance, a significant upgrade to the LiDAR sensor, new rear cameras with the first-ever optical zoom lens on an iPhone, USB-C (with limitations), and the option for a brand-new deep red finish.
There is ongoing debate among leakers regarding a potential price increase for the iPhone 15 Pro, with some suggesting an increase of up to $200. However, the cost of standard models is expected to remain the same.
