The National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, has been temporarily closed following the collapse of one of its floodlight masts, according to Sunday Dare, Minister of Youths and Sport Development. The announcement was made in a statement after Dare personally inspected the damage caused by the fallen mast.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Dare had visited the stadium on Friday as part of a planned tour, with the intention of announcing his decision after assessing the situation. Following the inspection, he decided to close the stadium as a precautionary measure to prevent any unforeseen incidents.

Dare expressed relief that there were no casualties from the collapse and noted that the other three floodlight masts also showed signs of wear and tear after 51 years in service. He stated that the temporary closure of the stadium and its surrounding facilities would allow for proper evaluation and action to be taken as needed.
The minister also highlighted the ongoing concession process aimed at fully privatizing the Surulere Stadium. The process, which began last year, will be accelerated by the Federal Government through the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation and modernization of the 51-year-old facility.
Dare emphasized the importance of public safety in making the decision to close the stadium and impose extensive restrictions around the area. He called for the understanding and cooperation of anyone who might be inconvenienced by the closure, as the actual situation on the ground could not be fully determined.
