In a significant breakthrough, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully discovered a hidden laboratory involved in the production of the highly dangerous substance known as Methamphetamine. The revelation came to light in Ikeja, Lagos, as confirmed by Femi Babafemi, the spokesperson for the anti-narcotics agency, in a statement released on Sunday.
Babafemi disclosed that during the operation, law enforcement officers were able to seize packaged sachets of the illicit drug, along with various precursor chemicals used in its production. The clandestine laboratory, located at No. 4, Bode Oluwo Street, Mende, Maryland, Ikeja, was raided on June 6 following credible intelligence and surveillance that substantiated illegal drug manufacturing at the premises.
“At the end of the search, one kilogramme of already produced and packaged methamphetamine, along with quantities of precursor chemicals, were recovered,” Babafemi stated.
He further revealed that additional items associated with the production of the deadly substance were discovered within the residence. Efforts are currently underway to apprehend the owner of the house, who managed to escape.
Furthermore, the NDLEA, on June 5, made significant arrests in the Oyingbo area of Lagos. Two suspects, Wasiu Saliu and Afolabi Banjo, were apprehended in possession of 247 kilograms of skunk, a potent form of cannabis. Another suspect, Tijani Damilola, was also captured in Isheri with 12.5 litres of skuchies and 98 kilograms of cannabis sativa, which belonged to a fugitive suspect.
The relentless efforts of the NDLEA continued to yield positive results, as Adebowale Babatunde was arrested on June 8 in Mushin, with an additional 12.5 kilograms of the same illicit substance in his possession.
The NDLEA spokesperson emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and production in Nigeria. The successful operation to dismantle the secret methamphetamine laboratory and the subsequent arrests of individuals involved in various drug-related offenses stand as testament to their unwavering dedication to the cause of eradicating illicit drug activities in the country.
