In response to circulating reports, the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) has vehemently denied any intentions of increasing electricity tariffs for its customers effective July 1, 2023. The official statement was released on the company’s website on June 26, 2023.
Speculations arose after an online news platform (Not The PUNCH) published an article on June 25, 2023, suggesting that electricity distribution companies would raise their tariffs starting from July 1, 2023. The article claimed that the DisCos had notified their customers across the country via text messages, attributing the tariff adjustment to the fluctuation of the naira in the exchange rate market.
Quoting an alleged message from IKEDC to its customers, the report stated, “Dear Customers, electricity tariffs are set to go higher on July 1st due to the floating exchange rate…” The message went on to provide details about the potential tariff adjustments for different supply hour bands and advised customers to purchase energy units in advance to save costs.
However, IKEDC swiftly dismissed the report as false, categorizing it as fake news. The company reassured its customers that no such plans were in place and urged them to disregard any information not officially issued by IKEDC.
In a statement addressing the matter, IKEDC emphasized the importance of relying on its authentic communication channels for accurate updates and information. Customers were directed to follow the company on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook or visit the official website, www.ikejaelectric.com, to access reliable information regarding their services.
