The rankings include a comprehensive assessment of 1,904 universities spanning 108 countries and regions. Nigerian universities have shown remarkable performance as the academic world eagerly scrutinizes these rankings.

Covenant University tops the list of Nigerian institutions, solidifying its position as a beacon of academic excellence in the country. This private university, known for its commitment to quality education and innovation, achieved the remarkable feat of being the top-ranked Nigerian university in the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Following closely behind Covenant University, the University of Ibadan secured the second position. The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), emerged as the third-best university in Nigeria, a testament to its dedication to cutting-edge research and education.

The University of Lagos and the University of Bayero also claimed the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, rounding out the top five Nigerian universities.

Times Higher Education employed its new WUR 3.0 methodology for these rankings, employing carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure institutions across five critical areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.

This rigorous evaluation process ensures that the rankings provide a comprehensive overview of each university’s strengths and weaknesses.

In addition to the top five universities, several other Nigerian institutions made their mark in the 2024 rankings. These include the University of Ilorin, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Afe Babalola University, the University of Benin, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Lagos State University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Port Harcourt. Each of these universities showcased their commitment to academic excellence on a global scale.

Remarkably, among the top 15 universities in Nigeria, nine are located in the South West, underlining the region’s strong presence in the academic landscape. Two universities are situated in the South East, two in the South South, one in the North West, and one in the North Central, exemplifying the geographic diversity of Nigeria’s top academic institutions.

While Covenant University achieved the top spot in Nigeria, it is placed within the global 801-1000 range, demonstrating its significant presence on the international stage. This recognition reaffirms Covenant University’s commitment to fostering world-class education and research in Nigeria.

As the academic year progresses, these rankings serve as a reminder of the remarkable strides Nigerian universities are making in the global education landscape, with Covenant University leading the charge, setting an exemplary standard for academic excellence in the nation.
