The Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure and diversion of traffic on Eko Bridge to allow for emergency repairs. The repair work, set to be carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works, is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 16, and will last for eight weeks, with the bridge expected to reopen in the second week of November.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, disclosed this development in a statement on Friday, explaining that the repair works will be carried out in four phases. During this period, Eko Bridge will experience intermittent partial or full closures, depending on the phase of the work.
Travel Advisory Issued
To minimise disruptions, Osiyemi released a travel advisory for motorists and road users. He advised those heading to the Island from Funsho Williams Avenue to use the service lane at Alaka, connect to Costain, and access Eko Bridge to continue their journey.
Alternatively, motorists can also head to Costain directly to connect to Eko Bridge and link Apongbon for their destinations. Additionally, those heading in the opposite direction, from Apongbon inwards Eko Bridge, can link Costain and access Funsho Williams Avenue.
For those heading towards Surulere, Osiyemi suggested using Costain to link Breweries, then proceeding through Abebe Village to connect Eric Moore or Bode Thomas Road to reach their destinations.
He further advised motorists to consider Apapa Road from Costain to Oyingbo, connecting through Adekunle to access the Third Mainland Bridge for onward travel.
LASTMA Officers to Manage Traffic
To ease the expected traffic pressure and minimise inconvenience, Osiyemi assured that officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be strategically deployed to monitor the repair zones and alternative routes.
Motorists are urged to follow the advisory and cooperate with traffic officials to reduce delays during the repair period.
