Vice President Kamala Harris surprised viewers with a cameo on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, bringing humor and energy to the show’s cold open just days before the election. Appearing in the final “SNL” episode before the polls, Harris received an enthusiastic response from the live audience at Studio 8H in New York.
The skit began with comedian Maya Rudolph reprising her well-known portrayal of Harris, a role she has frequently taken on since 2020. Rudolph’s Harris, seeking a moment of relatability, stands before a mirror and jokes about wanting to chat with someone who shares her unique experiences as a Black and Southeast Asian woman and former prosecutor now vying for the White House. As she speaks, the real Kamala Harris suddenly appears in the mirror, quipping, “You and me both, sister,” to roaring applause.
During their banter, Harris took a playful dig at her potential opponent, Donald Trump. She assured her “mirror twin” that she has a good chance in the election, joking that she can “do things her opponent can’t… like open doors”—a nod to Trump’s recent awkward moment trying to open the door of a garbage truck.
The lighthearted sketch then transitioned into a comedic rhyming bit, with both Kamalas playfully substituting parts of common words with “-malas,” like “pajamalas” for pajamas and “Keep Calmala and Carry Onala” for the famous phrase “Keep Calm and Carry On.”
The scene concluded with the pair linking arms and delivering “Live from New York, It’s Saturday Night,” as the crowd cheered and comedian John Mulaney took the stage to begin his monologue.
This SNL appearance capped off a busy day for Harris. Earlier, she addressed a rally in Atlanta before flying to Detroit for more campaign events. Her stop in New York for the show was reportedly unplanned, catching her press pool off guard when Air Force Two made a detour. While the cameo was anticipated after the rerouting, Harris’ performance delivered, adding a moment of humor and camaraderie to an intense election season.
