President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Abuja yesterday evening for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit. The summit, which takes place over two days, was convened by host President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Tinubu’s trip to the summit comes shortly after a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The theme of the gathering is “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.”
In a statement released by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, it was noted that the G20 summit will bring together leaders of the world’s major economies, alongside key representatives from the African Union, the European Union, and prominent international financial institutions.
The summit’s agenda includes discussions on eradicating global hunger and poverty, reforming international governance structures, and advancing initiatives for sustainable development and energy transition. These issues resonate with Nigeria’s advocacy for reforms within global institutions and the nation’s long-standing aspiration for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
During the summit, President Tinubu is expected to engage in bilateral talks aimed at furthering Nigeria’s socio-economic reform initiatives.
The President’s high-level delegation to the summit includes Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development; Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture and Creative Economy; Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security; and Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.
The G20 comprises 19 countries and the European Union, representing major global economies including the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Turkey.
