Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has taken full responsibility for the team’s 2-1 defeat to the Amavubi of Rwanda, acknowledging lapses in defensive organization that led to Nigeria conceding two quick goals. The match, played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, saw the West Africans initially take the lead through a stunning solo effort from Samuel Chukwueze.
However, the game quickly turned against Nigeria as Rwanda capitalized on defensive mistakes to overturn the scoreline. Speaking to reporters after the match, Troost-Ekong accepted blame for his role in the loss. “Yes, you’re right, and I take responsibility,” he stated. “As captain and the last man at the back, I know we should have done better.”
Troost-Ekong highlighted the challenges posed by set pieces, a weakness Rwanda exploited. “But don’t forget, free kicks, like other set-piece situations, can trouble any team, and I think that’s what happened today. So, I take responsibility,” he added.
Despite the disappointing loss, the Super Eagles remain qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Fans and analysts, however, are calling for improvements in the team’s defensive coordination ahead of future matches.
