China has announced plans to impose retaliatory tariffs on select American imports, along with launching an antitrust investigation into Google. The move is in response to new tariffs on Chinese products introduced by former US President Donald Trump.
The Chinese government’s actions coincide with Trump’s decision to pause similar tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports for 30 days. This delay came after Canada and Mexico pledged to address US concerns regarding border security and drug trafficking.
Trump, who had been vocal about his tough stance on China, is expected to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping soon. “It is being scheduled and will happen very soon,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
This latest development is reminiscent of the 2018 trade war between the two countries. At that time, Trump repeatedly raised tariffs on Chinese goods, and China retaliated each time, leading to a prolonged cycle of economic confrontation.
The upcoming antitrust probe into Google signals that China may be targeting US tech giants as part of its broader countermeasures. Experts believe these actions could further strain trade relations between the two global powers.
