The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu Amupitan, has denied owning an X account and warned the public against fake posts attributed to him on the social media platform. Amupitan's media aide released a statement on his behalf, describing allegations that the INEC boss endorsed a political post on X as entirely baseless and a fabrication.
The statement came after social media users circulated posts purporting to come from Amupitan's X account. The INEC chairman's office has long maintained strict protocols about his public communications, channeling official statements through designated media representatives and the commission's official channels.
Amupitan, a professor with decades of experience in electoral administration, took over as INEC chairman in June 2022. His tenure has been marked by efforts to strengthen the commission's independence and credibility ahead of major elections. The denial underscores growing concerns about impersonation on X, where verified accounts have become targets for fraudulent mimicry.
The INEC leadership has increasingly focused on combating misinformation surrounding the commission's operations and electoral processes. By publicly disassociating himself from the disputed X account, Amupitan sought to prevent confusion among citizens and stakeholders about the commission's actual positions on political matters.
The warning from Amupitan's office signals the need for the public to verify information through official INEC channels before sharing or acting on posts attributed to the chairman. INEC's official X account remains the authentic platform for disseminating information about electoral matters and commission policies.
