The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Nasarawa State University, Kano has threatened to down tools over the government's failure to pay outstanding salaries, allowances, and meet funding commitments to the institution.
The union gave the Nasarawa state government an ultimatum to settle all outstanding obligations or face industrial action. The lecturers say they have waited long enough for the government to fulfil its promises to the university.
NSUK staff have not received their full salaries and several allowances for months, leaving many struggling to manage basic expenses. The university's operational funding has also dried up, affecting teaching, research, and administrative functions across departments.
The union argues that the government signed agreements to support NSUK but has consistently failed to honour those commitments. Without immediate action, union leaders say they will have no choice but to withdraw services and shut down academic activities at the institution.
This threat comes as similar industrial actions have crippled universities across Nigeria over the past year, with the national ASUU also engaging in prolonged strikes over comparable issues. Students at NSUK face potential disruption to their academic calendar if the union proceeds with the threatened action.
The Nasarawa state government has not yet responded publicly to the union's ultimatum. The union has set a deadline for the government to begin clearing the arrears and releasing the required funding for university operations.
