James and Colwill back in Chelsea training, McFarlane warns no rush

Chelsea defender Reece James and centre-back Levi Colwill have returned to full team training, but boss Callum McFarlane says the club will not force either player back into matches until they are completely ready.

Both men have been sidelined by injury but rejoined the squad at Cobham this week. McFarlane told reporters that the pair are "looking good" and "looking promising" as they work through their recovery programme. The signs are positive enough that they could feature in Chelsea's next fixture, but that decision will come down to how they perform in final training sessions before the game.

McFarlane said: "Reece is back in training. Levi is back in training. Both looking good. Both are looking promising." The measured tone reflected the club's approach to their return. Chelsea have enough matches left in the season that there is no need to gamble with players who are not fully fit, and another injury suffered through rushing back would do more damage than giving them extra days to recover.

The medical staff are taking a day-by-day view of both defenders. Each training session will tell them more about whether James and Colwill are truly ready to handle the intensity of competitive football again. If either man shows any sign of discomfort or loss of sharpness, the club will keep him out.

For Chelsea fans, the news offers genuine hope. James is one of the best right-backs in the Premier League when fit, and Colwill has become a cornerstone of the defence this season. Their return to full training suggests the injuries were not as serious as initially feared. However, McFarlane's refusal to commit to their availability shows the club learned lessons from past mistakes with premature comebacks.

Chelsea will assess both players' responses to the upcoming training sessions before naming the squad for their next match. A final decision on whether James and Colwill start, feature off the bench, or sit out entirely will come in the 24 hours before kickoff.
