Bandits kidnap 50 elders during peace meeting in Zamfara

Fifty community elders sent to broker peace with armed bandits were abducted during negotiations in Zamfara State on Tuesday. The elders, drawn from several local government areas, had travelled to meet with gang leaders in a bid to end the cycle of kidnappings and killings that have ravaged the region for years.

The abduction happened at the meeting venue, where the elders were ambushed by the very bandits they came to negotiate with. Sources said the gunmen held the elders at gunpoint before forcing them into vehicles and driving them into the bush. The exact location where they were taken remains unclear, though residents believe they were moved deep into forests that straddle Zamfara and neighbouring states.

Community leaders said the elders were well-respected men with track records of resolving disputes. Their families have since begun raising ransom demands that the bandits are expected to make in coming days. One resident said the kidnapping marks a new low in the security crisis. "These are men who were trying to help, trying to save lives," he said. "Instead, the bandits have made them victims."

The Zamfara government has not yet issued an official statement on the incident. Security forces have begun search operations in surrounding forests, though results so far remain unclear. Previous peace efforts in the state have yielded mixed results, with some agreements holding briefly before bandits resumed attacks. Residents say Tuesday's abduction will make future negotiation attempts far more difficult, as no community leader will now be willing to meet bandits face to face.

The kidnapping adds to mounting pressure on Zamfara's government to secure the state, where armed groups control large swathes of territory and communities live under near-constant threat. Families of the abducted elders are expected to meet with government officials on Wednesday to discuss rescue options and possible ransom negotiations.
