Taylor Swift has received another major addition to her already impressive collection of ever-increasing accolades, this time being named the Woman of the Decade by Billboard.
Taylor Swift burst onto the music scene at the tender age of 14 and since then has gone on to win many awards (most notably 10 Grammys), becoming one of the most successful female artists of all-time.
At the event which took place today (Friday, December 13, 2019) at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, the 30-year-old musician looked glamorous and stylish in a dark blue sleeveless jumpsuit and in a heartwarming acceptance speech said that as a female artist, she had seen that people would always have reservations about her gender.
Taylor also stated that this was the decade she became a mirror to her detractors, choosing to do exactly what they said she couldn’t.
I want to say thank you so much to Billboard for giving me this honor… So what does it mean to be the woman of this decade?
When this decade began, I was 20 years old and I had put out my self-titled debut album when I was 16… I saw that there was a world of music that I was really curious about. And I saw that as a female in this industry some people will always have slight reservations about you.
… I saw that people love to explain away a woman’s success in the music industry. And I saw something in me change due to this realization. This was the decade when I became a mirror for my detractors. Whatever they decided I couldn’t do, is exactly what I did…Taylor Swift
She went on to add that she had something to say back at those who said something about her and that the reflex dictated more than just her lyrics.
Taylor concluded by saying that in ten years she had seen forward steps in the industry, citing the influence of the social media in the career of artists and revealing that she had leaned on the support from that angle provided by her fans.
The singer reiterated her commitment to making music for her fans, saying she has been doing whatever she wants lately instead of listening to those talking about what she couldn’t do. She then thanked all those present before exiting the stage.
