‘The Mandalorian’: Jon Favreau Talks About The Series’ Future & Baby Yoda

Filmmaker and actor Jon Favreau was recently engaged in a discussion about where the hit Disney + series The Mandalorian was headed and the popular character of ‘Baby Yoda’.

The Mandalorian is arguably the hottest series right now, thanks to its affiliation with the Star Wars franchise and the ever-growing popularity of the pint-sized character that fans have named ‘Baby Yoda’.

When its first episode aired, there were concerns that the series would not do well because of the fact that the main character’s facial expressions are never revealed (his Mandalorian heritage forbids him to take off his helmet). But the arrival of Baby Yoda and some interesting development in the plot have helped to spice things up.

Favreau said that they had the opportunity to explore even beyond the characters seen on the show and that they were putting efforts to ensure that the storyline for the characters would be figured out.

There’s definitely the opportunity to explore these characters beyond what we’ve presented on the show. There’s a very fluid line between what’s in the movie theaters and what’s on the screen at home. It’s very exciting for me because I get to tell stories over the course of several hours and not just within the footprint of one theater-going experience. I think it’s only a matter of time before we cross paths the other way.

“I’m putting a lot of effort working with [The Mandalorian producer] Dave Filoni to figure out what the overarching story is and the storyline for all these characters and what the world is like. We want to make sure that we have a road map because we’re also a puzzle piece that fits into a larger Star Wars universe that has a lot of other movies and a lot of other projects, and we want to make sure we’re consistent with them.

[On Baby Yoda] We’ll learn more about him over the course of the season. I think what’s great about what George [Lucas] created is that Yoda proper, the character that we grew up watching, was always shrouded in mystery, and that was what made him so archetypal and so mythic. We know who he is based on his behavior and what he stands for, but we don’t know a lot of details about where he comes from or his species. Jon Favreau is known for playing Happy Hogan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the driver, and confidante of Tony Stark/Iron Man who has now become more of a mentor to Spider-Man since the demise of the founding Avenger.

Favreau also directed the Disney live-action remakes of The Jungle Book (2016) and The Lion King (2019).
