Officials of the Nigerian Police Force on Tuesday stormed the venues of the protest to support the South West security network, Operation Amotekun’ in Lagos, Oyo and Ogun states respectively.
Recall that the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had in a statement, described the Western Nigeria Security network codenamed ‘Operation Amotekun’ as illegal.
The Lagos protest tagged “Amotekun Solidarity Walk”. held at the Gani Fawehinmi Park was organised by the Yoruba World Congress.
Over twenty-five police vans with armed policemen were present to prevent the group from accessing the park.
In Ibadan, security operatives at the venue was increased with the presence of officers from the Department of State Service and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
In Ogun state, TheNation reports that as the rally was ongoing, the presence of the Nigerian Police officers and the Department of State Security, DSS, were felt.
Although the rally was not stopped but the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Kenneth Ebrimson, who visited the venue said the people have rights to peaceful assembly as enshrined in the constitution but added that security Operatives were put on ground to forestall any breach of peace.
Ebrimson warned whoever tries to harass or intimidate other law abiding Nigerians from engaging in their legitimate business in the name of rally would have the full weight of the law “descending ruthlessly on him.”
