Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake In Turkey Leaves Eight Dead, Hundreds Injured

A strong earthquake shook parts of eastern Turkey Friday, killing at least 8 people and injuring more than 300.

Several buildings were damaged and people ran outside for safety.

The quake was centered about 2.5 miles northeast of Doganyol, or about 460 miles east of Ankara near the town of Sivrice in eastern Elazig province, at a depth of about 6 miles. It struck at about 8:55 p.m. local time.

Three of the deaths were in Elazig province, Gov. Cetin Oktay Kaldirim told NTV television, according to The Associated Press, and five were in nearby Malatya province. At least 315 people were injured – 225 in Elazig and 90 in Malatya.

Four or five buildings collapsed in Sivrice, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said, and rescuers were trying to reach survivors of a multi-story building collapse in the town of Maden.

Local administrator Cuma Telceken said as many as seven people were believed to be trapped inside two collapsed buildings in Maden.

Photos posted to social media showed a building with extensive damage.
