Empire star Jussie Smollett may return to the series for its final season as he is currently in talks with the show’s executives.
The Fox season hasn’t been quite the same since the actor was unceremoniously written off following his claim of being attacked by two men who he says put a noose around his neck.
Smollett plays the role of Jamal Lyon, the second son of music tycoon and legendary artiste Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) whose life has seen ups and downs, particularly as a result of his being gay.
Some major events in Empire’s sixth season which should have featured Jamal’s presence have ended up being less than what they should be as his absence has affected the show in a lot of ways.
The series creator Lee Daniels had been unequivocal in the statement he made back in June that Smollett would not be returning but it looks like he has realized how important it is to have him as the show comes to its conclusion.
Showrunner Bret Mahoney spoke to TV Line about their consideration of Smollett’s return, stating that it would be weird to end it without seeing him as his was a significant part.
It would be weird in my mind to end this family show and this family drama of which he was such a significant part of without seeing him. It’s fair to say it’s being discussed, but there’s no plan as of yet to bring him back. There’s been no decision made.Bret Mahoney
Empire’s season finale will air in 2020.
