According to a report by Variety, the filmmaker made the decision to step down but will remain attached to the project as a producer.

James Mangold has also had an impressive career as a director, with recent films like Logan and Ford v Ferrari picking up notable nominations.

Sources revealed that Spielberg left the directorial position in order to make way for a younger generation to bring their perspective to the production.

Mangold has shown that he is good at making both action and dramatic features and should be a viable replacement for the more experienced Spielberg.

Harrison Ford is returning as the hero. He was most recently seen in the just-released movie adaptation of The Call of the Wild.
