Jennifer Lawrence is primed to star in Adam McKay’s comedy feature Don’t Look Up.
Netflix has tapped into the upcoming film which will tell the story of two low-level astronomers who must go on a tour around the world to warn humanity of an approaching asteroid on a course to destroy the earth.
The project was first announced by Deadline in November 2019 which was penned by McKay. He will also produce via his Hyperobject Industries banner alongside Kevin Messick.
McKay was enthusiastic about working with Jennifer Lawrence, stating:
I’m so thrilled to make this movie with Jen Lawrence. She’s what folks in the 17th century used to call ‘a dynamite talent’. And the fact that Netflix sees this movie as a worldwide comedy sets the bar high for me and my team in an exciting and motivating way.
Lawrence’s rise in Hollywood has been astronomical and her Oscar win for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook (2012) further attests to her credibility as an actress.
Head of Netflix films Scott Stuber spoke about the prospect of working with director McKay on the project:
Adam has always had great timing when it comes to making smart, relevant and irreverent films that depict our culture. Even if he somehow ends up predicting planet Earth’s imminent demise, we’re excited to add this to our slate before it all comes to an end.
The filmmaker and Lawrence have another production in the works, Bad Blood, which McKay is also directing.
