Actress Zoe Saldana will be starring in the Casey Affleck-produced sports film Fencer.
Saldana featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe playing Gamora, the adopted daughter of Thanos who fights alongside the Avengers in the last epic battle with the Mad Titan.
Saldana was also a part of the cast of the ground-breaking James Cameron movie Avatar (2009) and has other impressive Hollywood movies to her name.
Inspired by director Jasmine McGlade’s experiences as a national champion fencer, the upcoming film will be produced by Casey Affleck with HanWay Films, UTA Independent Film Group, and CAA Media Finance overseeing the U.S. sale.
As an athlete, McGlade capped her time at Harvard University by leading her team to the school’s first-ever NCAA Championship title in fencing.
Speaking on the project, McGlade said:
As a writer and filmmaker I seek to tell brazen, character-driven stories about people who are flawed, and thus real – especially women. Characters who are their own worst enemies and yet incredibly resilient. ‘Fencer’ is a celebration of perseverance and sacrifice, while also a cautionary tale about the dangers of getting one’s sense of worth and security solely through achievement and external validation.
