Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez is poised to play real-life Columbian drug lord Griselda Blanco in The Godmother.
Deadline reports that the upcoming film will be directed by Reed Morano, the award-winning filmmaker behind The Handmaid’s Tale.
William Monahan is in talks to rewrite a first draft of the script first penned by Terry Winter and Regina Corrado.
The Godmother follows the ups and downs of Blanco, who outsmarted and outhustled the men around her to rise from an impoverished background to become one of the world’s biggest drug lords.
She was reportedly worth more than $2 billion and was a major figure in Miami’s bloody Cocaine Cowboy Wars.
The production was set up by STX last July, where Lopez got her biggest live-action opening with Hustlers.
Producing the forthcoming biopic are Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina.
