It has been confirmed by Mad Max director George Miller that the fifth film in the franchise is a Furiosa prequel but won’t have actress Charlize Theron in it.
Theron’s performance as the determined female heroine in Mad Max: Fury Road made the character one of the most memorable action movie heroines of all time.
Reports indicate that Miller has been hoping to make a Furiosa sequel for years, as well as a spinoff based on a younger version of the character.
Miller, according to reports, recently auditioned actress Anya Taylor-Joy for a Furiosa movie, hoping to begin filming next year.
Taylor-Joy’s role may not be taking over from Theron as Furiosa but Miller’s latest comments show that he is planning a Furiosa film with a younger version of her in mind.
In a chat with NYT, the filmmaker confirmed that he is working on a Furiosa prequel based on a script that he and Fury Road co-writer Nick Lathouris penned years ago.
Miller said that he considered de-aging Theron with CGI in the film but after seeing the de-aging effects used in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, he feels the technology isn’t where he wants it to be yet.
His words:
For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet. Despite the valiant attempts on ‘The Irishman,’ I think there’s still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particularly Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”
