Disney is developing a movie musical set in the songs of the legendary singer Lionel Richie.
Richie serves as a judge on the Disney-owned American Idol series and Variety reports that the upcoming project is titled All Night Long.
The pitch for the production was sold by the singer to the studio in January 2020 and it is now being developed with a theatrical release planned.
Unlike films like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman which were music biopics telling the stories of Freddie Mercury and Elton John, All Night Long will not be about Lionel Richie, but wit will use his music in the same way that the Mamma Mia! movies are based on the music of ABBA.
Pete Chiarelli (who wrote Crazy Rich Asians) will write the script, and Richie will produce alongside his manager Bruce Eskowitz as well as Dana Brunetti, and Matt Del Piano of Calvary Media.
Richie has sold over 100 million records worldwide in the course of his music career, making him one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time.
He is also the recipient of 3 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s highest honor, the Johnny Mercer Award.
