Thomas Lane, one of the officers charged in the case of the late George Floyd, is hoping the public will support him with funds as he attempts to mount his legal defense.
As hard as it is to believe, the former cop who was arrested and charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder, and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter is soliciting public funds via a website they have set up.
Lane’s bail has been set at $1 million and if convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of up to 40 years in jail. He and two other ex-officers face the same charges.
Through the website that Lane and his family have set up, they try pleading for his case, arguing that he did everything in his power to save Floyd’s life on the fateful day (May 25, 2020).
Lane’s family points out that he suggested rolling Floyd on his side, something which they and prosecutors say Officer Derek Chauvin (the cop who kept his knee on the back of Floyd’s neck) refused to do.
Lane happens to be the officer who was on Floyd’s back and therefore closest to Chauvin. The majority of Americans (and several law enforcement veterans) believe think he and his colleagues should have removed Chauvin.
The family says Lane called for the ambulance before Floyd lost consciousness and when it arrived, Lane “did not hesitate to jump into the ambulance where he started performing CPR to try and save George Floyd’s life.”
They further state that it was the chain of command is the only thing that stopped Lane from doing more. Added to these, he has was new on the job, having been just four days on the streets.
With the nationwide protests still going on, Lane and his family have one heck of a battle to fight as they hope to win the case.
