The memorial held for George Floyd in Houston yesterday ended on a high note as Harris County Judge Lina Hildalgo declared Tuesday, June 9 George Floyd Day throughout the area.
TMZ reports that the event saw final words from family members of other notable black victims who have died as a result of police brutality.
Floyd’s family took the microphone first, saying that it was their belief that if he had known he needed to sacrifice his life to bring the world together, he would have done it.
Eric Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, gave a speech, urging people (especially the Floyd family) to continue fighting for justice once the cameras stop rolling because the struggle doesn’t end there.
Ahmaud Arbery’s dad, Marcus Arbery, spoke as well, recalling how his son was lynched by two white men because of the color of his skin. He too emphasized the need for the fight for justice to continue.
The memorial which took place on Monday, June 8, 2020, proved to be more historic after Judge Lina Hidalgo of Harris County proclaimed Tuesday, June 9 as George Floyd day in the area.
Floyd’s death moved many across the world, sparking international protests in what could lead to the dismantling of the Minneapolis Police Department.
