For the first time since his death last week at the hands of a policeman, the mother of George Floyd’s daughter has spoken about the tragedy and its effects on their lives.
Roxie Washington gave voice to her thoughts on June 2, 2020, letting everyone see the devastating effect of Officer Derek Chauvin’s actions.
In a short and tearful statement alongside Gianna, the six-year-old daughter of the late Floyd, Roxie mourned the loss with the following words:
I don’t have a lot to say, because I can’t get my words together right now. But I wanted everybody to know that this is what those officers took. At the end of the day, they get to go home and be with their families. Gianna does not have a father.
He will never see her grow up, graduate, he will never walk her down the aisle. If there’s a problem she’s having and she needs her dad, she does not have that anymore. I’m here for my baby, and I’m here for George because I want justice for him. I want justice for him because he was good.”
Floyd’s death sparked a nationwide protest in the U.S. which quickly turned violent as the police showed up to try to get control over the demonstrators.
While all four officers involved in the killing have been fired, only Chauvin has been charged with murder.
