Rapper and businessman Kanye West has launched a college fund for George Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter Gianna.
While many took to the streets to show their anger over Floyd’s killing last week, Kanye West was surprisingly silent, unlike many celebrities who joined protesters or spoke out in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
Now, the rapper has revealed through his representative that he donated $2 million to charities associated with Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd.
Kanye set up a college fund to cover the tuition for Gianna Floyd, and in addition, he has pledged to pay the legal costs for the Arbery and Taylor families. He will also be helping black-owned businesses in his hometown of Chicago with financial contributions.
Not long after the announcement of Kanye’s generosity, he joined protesters to march on Chicago’s South Side.
Derek Chauvin, the officer responsible for Floyd’s death, has been charged by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison with second-degree murder, and Officers Tou Thao, Thomas Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng were charged on Wednesday with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, Ellison said, “George Floyd mattered. He was loved. His family was important. His life had value, and we will seek justice for him and for you, and we will find it.”
