Wonder Woman 1894 actor Chris Pine has revealed that Steve Trevor is 180 degrees different in tone from the first film.
Initially scheduled to arrive last November, Wonder Woman 1984 had to be moved to a June release and then pushed even further to August 2020, no thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The latest shuffling of the release schedule has the upcoming superhero movie due to arrive in October 2020 and speaking with Total Magazine (via Heroic Hollywood), Chris Pine got into specific details about Steve Trevor’s return in the sequel.
Steve Trevor sacrificed his last in the first film during the war, and we have been informed that his unexpected return is traceable to the mysterious antagonist Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal).
Pine dishes on how the character he plays is different from his first outing:
What I will say about him is that he’s deeply, supremely excited. He’s excited to be back with Diana. He’s excited about this world. Tonally, what’s different is, he’s not world-weary. He’s not jaded. It’s a complete 180 from the tone of the character of the first one.
I thought it was a nice idea. It’s a brilliant move on [director] Patty [Jenkins’] part. That’s just one clear indication of a big tonal shift this time out. Patty, towards the end of the first one, had been marinating on an idea. So yeah, I had an idea that I would come back. I think she may have even started to break the story while we were promoting [the first film].”
In the upcoming flick, Diana (Gal Gadot) confronts two villains – Maxwell Lord and Cheetah (played by Kristen Wiig). But she is going to be prepared as she gets a major upgrade in her superhero costume.
Wonder Woman 1984 is directed by Patty Jenkins and will be released in the United States on October 2, 2020.
