Tom Cruise's Reaction As 'Top Gun 2' Breaks Record In Box Office

Tony Scott’s long-awaited sequel to Top Gun, entitled Top Gun: Maverick, released on May 27th, 2022. This time around Tom Cruise returns as the titular “Maverick”, Pete Mitchell. The film has since gone on to break box office records by earning $105 million in its first weekend alone.

After 36 years, audiences finally got a chance to check out the high-paced Tom Cruise’s portrayal of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the film, Top Gun: Maverick. It seems that after avoiding promotion for many years, Maverick is once more forced into action when Adm. Kazansky assigns him to help train new TOPGUN pilots through the intervention of one of his greatest mistakes when he learns one of his students is Brad “Rooster” Bradshaw–the son of one of Cruise’s fallen wingmen from the pandemic. After having the best opening weekend of Cruise’s entire career so far and becoming the fourth film to earn over $100 million in its opening weekend since theatres reopened after the pandemic, Cruise has thanked fans for supporting Top Gun: Maverick.

With sales receipts breaking records, Cruise had a quick thank you for the fans on Twitter. He also thanked them for supporting Top Gun: Maverick and for helping it break records.

Top Gun 2: Maverick was one of the most anticipated films of 2019 before it officially hit theatres. After a screening at Cannes Film Festival, the film received a standing ovation, and critics praised the story and action sequences and with many reviewers stating the quality surpassed Top Gun 1. As expected, audiences are loving it and giving it a 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which has led to strong word-of-mouth surrounding the sequel.

Top Gun: Maverick has had a difficult journey to the big screen, moving from its release date of July 12th, 2019 until now. The movie has been delayed due to the complexity of its action sequences and closures following the COVID-19 pandemic. Paramount and Cruise are happy, however, audiences were able to see the film and have it become a success. A third film isn’t currently planned, but Top Gun: Maverick is set to make its mark as a standout blockbuster of 2022.
