The Steelers will soon be playing in a new stadium. The Heinz Field, built next to the long-time Steelers/Pirates home, is set to have an updated name.
Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan indicated that Heinz will end its arrangement to place its name on the location where the Steelers play.
Filliponi says a new naming-rights sponsor could be announced this week.
Heinz Field had a contract with current American football team the Pittsburgh Steelers, but this expired after 2020. However, the company has now agreed to provide the team with one year extension.
Heinz paid $57 million to use the Steeler organization’s logo for 20 years, an average of 2.85 million a year. The Steelers deserve better than that – with the amount of money the Steelers generate, it is likely that Kraft Heinz barely broke even
SoFi, for example, is paying $20 million per year to put its name at a stadium in L.A.
Fans will have to get used to a new name for the Steelers’ stadium. Heinz represents Pittsburgh, and it’s one of the few stadiums that has a local name, without the new name being tainted by corporate arguments. It felt good, organic. It’ll be hard for the new stadium name to carry that same vibe.
