Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Limited, said it has begun collaborating with 1004 housing estate, an area in Victoria Island, Lagos, to recover post-consumer plastic packaging waste generated by the community and, as a result, ensure they are adequately recycled in an effort to lessen the plastic pollution menace in the Lagos metro area.
Matthieu Seguin, NBC’s managing director, cited the network’s relationship with 1004 Estate for PET collection as evidence of the company’s commitment to recycling, environmental protection, and sustainable waste management.
He claims that the estate’s approximately 1077 flats and housing for over 5,000 people will be successfully managed thanks to the cooperation.
He stressed the company’s dedication to establishing environmentally responsible waste management procedures in the communities where it works and elsewhere in the country.
When asked about the company’s commitment to social and environmental responsibility, he responded, “As a socially and ecologically responsible organization, we appreciate the need of incorporating sustainability-inclined projects into our operations.
As a result, we have prioritized energy efficiency and water conservation as two of our most important sustainability goals. We have also noticed that, in the context of our Nigerian communities, waste management and plastic pollution remain a mainly intimidating pain point on our journey toward environmental sustainability.
With this in mind, we decided to attack the problem head-on by getting specific and interacting with communities on a one-to-one basis. 1004 Housing estate is just one of the residential areas we’ve began working with to recover post-consumer plastic packaging waste from and properly recycle.
He went on to explain that this would guarantee that the estate’s plastic garbage would be put to good use in a way that was both environmentally responsible and forward-thinking.
He mentioned that 18 specialized package collection facilities had been set up around the estate, and that Wastexchange Limited would be coordinating an evacuation and value exchange unit.
He went on to say that the Estate’s environmental sustainability footprint will improve thanks to the recycling scheme, and that future garbage evacuation costs would go down if residents were compliant.
“Further, there will be developed return structure to donate the financial equivalent of the recycled products to the estate for its communal development,” he said.
The Executive Committee of 1004 Home Owners and Residents Association (HORA) has spoken out about the Project, expressing their satisfaction with the Estate’s partnership with NBC and its partner on PET recycling.
Since 1004 Estate is the largest estate in all of West Africa, they stressed the importance of taking environmentally responsible measures there. They reaffirmed that the partnership provides the Estate with a chance to cooperate with the Nigerian Bottling Company to reduce the littering of the area and the use of single-use plastics and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.
