Following Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Manchester City secured their fifth Premier League title in the last six seasons. The only exception was in 2020 when Liverpool claimed the prestigious trophy.

Last season, Liverpool gave a tough fight to Pep Guardiola’s side, taking the title race down to the wire. However, their challenge faltered early in the current season, and Jurgen Klopp’s team is almost certain to finish outside the top four.

Nevertheless, Neville believes that Liverpool is the only team that has consistently proven their ability to challenge Manchester City for the league title. When asked about the team best positioned to compete with City, Neville stated, “The team that combines quality and mentality. At this moment, the team that has demonstrated this over the past six years is Liverpool. Although Arsenal have given City a close run this year, the only team I can say has come close to Guardiola’s City is Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.”

Acknowledging Liverpool’s dip in form this season, Neville expressed uncertainty about their ability to regain their previous standards next season. However, he emphasized that Liverpool has previously showcased their capability to reach those heights and cannot be discounted as serious contenders.

As the football community eagerly awaits the next Premier League season, the focus now shifts to how teams will strengthen their squads and prepare for the challenging campaign ahead. Liverpool, armed with their previous success and under the guidance of Klopp, will undoubtedly be aiming to reclaim their status as fierce title contenders.
