In a bid to fortify their midfield options, Manchester City has officially welcomed Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea this summer. The director of football for the club, Txiki Begiristain, shed light on the motivations behind the acquisition.

Following the confirmation of Kovacic’s move to the Premier League champions on Tuesday, the club’s manager, Pep Guardiola, sought to enhance his midfield squad after narrowly missing out on securing Jude Bellingham, who recently joined Real Madrid.
Adding to the midfield reshuffle, captain Ilkay Gundogan completed a free transfer to Barcelona on Monday, further necessitating the need for a midfield reinforcement.
Speaking at Kovacic’s unveiling, Begiristain explained, “He possesses the versatility to excel both as a defensive midfielder and an attacking midfielder. With his extensive experience at top-level clubs and his understanding of the Premier League, it was an obvious choice to bring him to City.”
The director of football emphasized Kovacic’s tactical and technical attributes, which perfectly align with the club’s requirements in a midfielder. “We have been closely monitoring him for quite some time, and every time we watched him play, we were thoroughly impressed,” Begiristain added.
