Drawing a comparison between the democracy enjoyed by Nigerians twenty-one years ago and the present political landscape, Obi highlighted the unique qualities of June 12, 1993. On that historic day, Nigerians defied divisions of ethnicity, religion, and region to express their true choice through a transparent voting process, even under military rule. The collective choice of the late Chief M. K. O. Abiola as a worthy leader was celebrated both within the country and across the world.

However, Obi pointed out that the current state of Nigerian politics paints a different picture. The nation grapples with numerous fundamental problems, including the search for a credible electoral system that can regain the trust and confidence of all Nigerians, just as June 12 did. He called for a return to the true virtues of a genuine democratic nation, emphasizing the need for an electoral system that commands the trust of the people and respects their wishes as expressed through the ballot.

Obi emphasized the importance of respecting and protecting the institutions of the democratic state, fulfilling the responsibilities of responsible governance outlined in the constitution, and upholding the rule of law. He lamented the prevalent impunity, pervasive violence, and bloodshed undermining the foundational pillars of democracy. The trust deficit between leaders and Nigerians continues to widen, as demonstrated by the lack of trust and efficiency evident in recent elections.

In the spirit of June 12, Obi urged the correction of the errors from past elections, as it is the surest way to restore the confidence of the people in the future of the nation and the promise of true democracy. Despite the challenges, he called on Nigerians not to lose faith in the inherent capacity of the democratic system to self-correct.

Obi remained committed to the belief that a new Nigeria is possible, emphasizing the need for selfless leaders dedicated to the national interest, sustainable development, and innovative thinking. He reiterated his promise to Nigerians that the fight for leadership that prioritizes their needs and aspirations will not waver.

On behalf of the Labour Party and the Obidient Movement, Obi extended wishes for a happy Democracy Day to all Nigerians, expressing hope for a future marked by equity, justice, security, and peace. He emphasized that these aspirations are realistic and achievable, and he remains committed to working towards their realization.
