The broadcasting landscape of Major League Baseball is abuzz following reports that Kevin Brown, the Baltimore Orioles’ play-by-play broadcaster, was removed from MASN broadcasts subsequent to a remark he made about the Orioles’ historical performance against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.
On July 23, prior to a game against the Rays, Brown highlighted the Orioles’ recent surge in form, pointing out they had secured as many victories at Tropicana Field in 2023 as they had in the combined previous three years. Brown’s observation was supported by an on-screen graphic detailing the team’s past challenges at the venue.
However, the comment did not sit well with the Orioles’ ownership. Both Awful Announcing and The Athletic reported that the ownership took exception to the reference. Notably, since the comment, Brown has not been featured on any MASN television broadcasts. MASN, the regional sports network in question, is a joint venture between the Orioles and the Washington Nationals.
The Orioles, while not confirming a suspension, responded to inquiries from Awful Announcing via a senior official, stating, “we don’t comment on personal matters” but also added that they are “looking forward to hearing Kevin’s voice soon.”
The purported removal of Brown from broadcasts has stirred reactions in the MLB broadcasting community, with several broadcasters expressing their criticism on Monday.
Having joined the Orioles in 2019, Kevin Brown has contributed both on TV and radio. Additionally, his sports broadcasting repertoire includes play-by-play commentating for various college sports on ESPN platforms.
It’s worth noting that the Orioles, under the ownership of Peter Angelos, faced a challenging period from 2018 to 2021, with less than stellar performances. However, the 2023 season has seen a commendable turnaround with the team currently holding the top spot in the American League East.
