Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has shared insights into her time at university in Benin Republic, likening it to her earlier school days.
In an interview with Billboard, Starr disclosed that she started university at the tender age of 14 and attended the same institution as her brothers.
“We were all enrolled in the same university, and our father insisted we live at home instead of the dormitories. It felt just like being in secondary school,” she explained. “We would leave for school from home, and on certain days, our father would come to pick us up. I remember feeling embarrassed, wishing to appear cool in front of my peers,” she continued.
Starr also shed light on her relationship with her brothers during their school years, particularly how they would share observations about school life.
“Being in university with my brothers was an adventure. We’d often share tidbits about daily occurrences because it was all so novel to us. The presence of older students living distinctly different lives fascinated us. It was entertaining to communicate with my siblings through glances alone; we found it hilarious,” she recounted.
When prompted about how she managed life between Lagos and Benin Republic, Starr pointed out the stark contrasts between the two places, with a special note on Lagos’s vibrant chaos.
“The differences between Nigeria and Benin Republic are stark, despite their geographical proximity. Benin Republic offers a tranquil atmosphere, particularly near the beach, where life moves at a leisurely pace. Lagos, on the other hand, is a whirlwind of activity. Arriving in Lagos feels like stepping into a frenzy. The transition was always stark for me, moving from the quiet of Benin Republic to the bustling energy of Lagos during holidays,” she described.
Starr emphasized how living in both countries has equipped her with the versatility to navigate various environments seamlessly.
