The minority caucus of the House of Representatives has unanimously called for a political solution to end the detention of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. This decision came in response to an appeal from Hon. Obinna Aguocha, representing the Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State.
The caucus, which includes about 180 members from seven political parties, threw its support behind the appeal during a dinner marking the end of the House’s first legislative year. The caucus is composed of members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 115 seats, Labour Party (LP) with 35 seats, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 19 seats, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 5 seats, Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 2 seats, Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 2 seats, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) with 2 seats.
Hon. Aguocha, who has been a consistent advocate for Kanu’s release, emphasized the need for a unified stance on the issue. He called for immediate and strategic engagement with relevant stakeholders to seek a peaceful and political resolution, stressing that resolving Kanu’s case is vital for national peace, stability, and unity.
Aguocha underscored the potential benefits of dialogue and reconciliation over prolonged legal battles and confrontations. He argued that a political solution could foster national integration and restore trust among Nigeria’s diverse communities.
The minority caucus, in addition to discussing Kanu’s detention, also deliberated on other pressing issues such as planned protests, insecurity, dilapidated infrastructure, and the state of the economy.
