San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. is unlikely to participate in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game, according to manager Mike Shildt. Tatis, who has been sidelined since June 21 due to a stress reaction in his right leg, was selected as a starting outfielder for the National League.
Despite acknowledging he could continue playing through the injury, team doctors advised against it. “It can get worse, and we don’t want that,” Tatis said. “I was playing through it and I probably could have kept going, but the doctors recommended to heal it now so that way it doesn’t get worse. It’s just better that way.”
The Padres have managed to stay in the NL postseason race without Tatis, winning seven of their last 10 games and maintaining a 48-43 record, securing a wild card berth. Tatis was having another strong season, hitting .279 with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs in 80 games, with a .354 on-base percentage.
San Diego will still have representation at the All-Star festivities. Outfielder Jurickson Profar was also named an All-Star starter, and Manny Machado could earn his seventh All-Star selection as a finalist at third base in the previous round of fan voting.
The 2024 MLB All-Star Game is scheduled for July 16 at 8 p.m. ET.
