Bolu Essien writes, produces and stars in Girls’ Hostel drama

Bolu Essien has created a new drama series called Girls' Hostel that draws on her own experience of boarding school, exploring the intensity of adolescence within a girls-only hostel environment. The show premieres on BoluEssienTV on YouTube from February 13, with Essien not only starring but also writing and producing the entire project.

The series follows Lara, a queen bee character played by Essien, whose power dynamic shifts when Ufoma, a wealthy transfer student with secrets, arrives at the school. As rivalry brews between them, carefully maintained reputations begin to crack. Essien said the show is "a nod to the past and a mirror to the present," mixing real-life experiences with imagined scenarios that she believes many Nigerians will recognise. "It's about that stage where the oppressed can become the oppressor, and where young people are desperately seeking to be seen, heard, and recognised," she explained.

The cast includes Onyinye Odokoro as Ufoma, alongside Eva Ibiam, Ronke Omooba Adepoju, Darasimi Ogbetah, Inem King, Miriam Peters, and Tomi Oladipo. Veteran actors Remi Surutu and Oluwatoyin Alausa round out the ensemble. Essien spent considerable time developing each character, documenting their backgrounds, motivations, and behavioural patterns before casting. "I knew who these characters were, how they would behave, how they would speak, their motives, even their background stories," she said. "I sought actors whom I believed could embody them fully, and I think we did a pretty great job."

Essien originally planned to make the show in 2023 but shelved it at the time. She returned to the project with renewed commitment, driven by what she describes as God's timing. "I'm very tenacious. If I believe in something, I pray and work towards it," she said. Emmanuel Essien executive produces alongside her, and the production has backing from brands including MTN, Nivea, Indomie, Power Oil, Cowbell, Twisco, Knorr, and Closeup.

The production prioritised authenticity over budget constraints. One hostel scene was filmed inside a hall that the team completely transformed, bringing in bunk beds, lockers, boxes, and pillows to make it feel lived-in and real. All uniforms, bedsheets, and hostel wear were custom-made, and the crew purchased school bags and notebooks to build a believable world. Essien credited her art director, Sarah of SB Creatives, with helping bring the vision to life. "Even if we don't have the deepest pockets, I don't compromise on authenticity," she said. Director Bunmi Akingbola led the creative direction, with Essien expressing pride in the entire crew's contribution.

On what makes Girls' Hostel stand out, Essien said "everything" sets it apart. The series explores themes of sisterhood, friendship, power dynamics, and survival, examining the formative experiences that shape young women. Essien is most grateful for the gift of storytelling itself. "Nothing gives me more joy or fulfilment," she said. Girls' Hostel launches on BoluEssienTV from February 13.
