The Yobe State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has settled on consensus to pick its candidates for the 2027 governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly elections.
The party made this decision at a state stakeholders' meeting in Damaturu, the capital. Party officials said the consensus approach would help avoid the kind of internal fights that have weakened APC chapters in other states during primary seasons.
Yobe APC has used consensus models before in previous election cycles. Party leaders argue the method allows them to unite behind candidates who have broad backing within the party, rather than forcing a winner-takes-all contest that leaves losers bitter and sometimes crossing to rival parties.
The consensus model means party elders and key figures will negotiate to pick a single candidate that most members can accept, rather than holding open primaries where multiple candidates compete for delegate votes. This reduces the cost of campaigns and the public divisions that come with contested primaries.
The party did not announce specific candidates or a timeline for when the consensus selection process would happen. Party officials said they would communicate further details to members in coming weeks.
