APC will hold direct primaries for 2027 if consensus fails, Buni says

Governor Mai Buni of Yobe State says the All Progressives Congress will resort to direct primaries for the 2027 elections if the party cannot agree on a consensus candidate.

Buni, who chairs the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, made the commitment while speaking about the party's plans ahead of the general election. He said the party remains committed to transparent processes that reflect the wishes of its members.

The governor's statement addresses concerns within the party about how it will select its flagbearer and other candidates. Some party members have pushed for direct primaries as the fairest way to choose candidates, while others have argued for consensus arrangements to maintain unity.

Buni said the APC values both approaches but will not shy away from allowing its members to vote directly if party leaders cannot rally behind a single candidate through consensus. He described direct primaries as transparent and democratic, assuring that whichever method the party uses will strengthen its position heading into the election.

The APC's approach contrasts with some opposition parties that have faced internal disputes over candidate selection. By committing to direct primaries as a fallback, Buni signalled the party wants to avoid the kind of acrimony that has weakened other political groups.

The party will continue consultations with its members and stakeholders to determine the best path forward for candidate selection. Buni did not specify a timeline for when the party would make a final decision on which method to use, but said the party leadership would engage widely before announcing its choice.
