Kebbi governor clears APC screening, vows fresh reforms

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has passed the All Progressives Congress screening process ahead of the 2027 presidential election, using the milestone to promise expanded developmental reforms if voters give him a second term.

Idris cleared the party's vetting on Tuesday, joining other APC aspirants who have gone through the screening exercise. The governor, who is completing his first term in office, told supporters he plans to deepen his reform agenda across key sectors if re-elected.

He did not provide specifics on which programmes would be expanded or new areas the administration would focus on, but emphasised his commitment to continuing the trajectory he has set since taking office. The governor's clearance from the APC screening means he can now move forward in the party's selection process for the 2027 general election.

Kebbi State, located in Nigeria's northwest, has been under Idris's leadership since 2015. His political future now depends on whether the APC selects him as its standard-bearer and whether he can win the general election if nominated. The party's screening exercise is designed to verify the credentials and eligibility of aspirants seeking to fly the APC flag in various elections.

Idris's pledge to expand reforms suggests he intends to campaign on his track record in office, rather than positioning himself as a break from the past. Whether this messaging resonates with voters will become clearer as the 2027 campaign season unfolds and other candidates declare their intentions.
